I ordered a new PC this week (more on that later) and found that I had now an old PC, not good for power usage, laying around. So I figured, why not install a Linux desktop to help monitor the servers I’m constantly watching… Enter Fedora! My first install of Linux locally in probably 6 or 7 years – and we’ve come a long way. Installation was a snap, it probably took only 30 minutes and now I have a fully functioning PC that is quick and is serving as a local file server. Yay me.!
Now, the bad news: I got a new Dell XPS 420 from the Dell Outlet. I typically am not too picky about the specs to custom build my PC, so I usually order from the outlet and haven’t had many issues… But this PC was an absolute dud. At first it slept whenever it wanted… then I realized the fan wasn’t functioning on the power supply. And then, the CD drives stopped opening because the case got in the way. Soooo, I figured out that the machine was sleeping because the fan wasn’t working and the proc was overheating! The CD, though, was another issue. So after about 6 or 7 calls to Dell they agreed to provision another PC and give me an exchange. All in all, not bad. BTW, the machine is a beast with a quad core and 512mb video card. I love it.
On that note, if anyone can tell me why Vista only recognizes 3GB out of an available 4GB, I’d love to know the reasoning. I’ve done some research and this seems to be a pretty flawed design to me.G’night!
