TaskFreak
I put up a post on Twitter a few weeks ago about how my productivity has improved via use of TaskFreak. Taskfreak is an open-source package that runs on any PHP/MySQL system. Best of all, its lightweight, looks great and does most of it’s updating via AJAX and not through page loads.
I had tried other solutions, including Remember The Milk, Basecamp, and various others but I wasn’t nearly as impressed. They were great apps but were overkill for what I needed. I was merely interested in a tool that would allow me to quickly add tasks, assign priorities, and track progress. TaskFreak does all of this and much, much more. Here is why YOU need TaskFreak (Yesterday!):
1) Its extensible! You can get tons of cool plugins at their website to do anything from track time spent on tasks to email reminders… Sure, some of these features may already be available in more comprehensive packages – but this app starts small and allows you to choose what to add.
2) Its open source… If you have the means, you can do some REALLY nifty s***. For example, I tied TaskFreak into my Jott account. Using Jott’s API I built a system that pings my server with new tasks I’ve read audibly into the Jott service. When I get back to my PC, tasks are waiting for me to take action upon them.
3) Its simple enough to be complex. It has everything I need to track tasks to completion: You can make comments on tasks (multi user is an option), mark progress, set priorities, set contexts (work, home, school). I haven’t run into a situation where I wasn’t able to accomplish something using this tool.
4) Its f-r-e-e! Like most of the best stuff on earth.
